Winthrop's Recreation Department offers programs year-round for children and adults. Sports programs are particularly abundant; kids can participate in little league, football, softball, soccer or hockey. Though covering only 1.6 square miles, Winthrop has a number of sections that all enjoy a long history since the town's first settlement in the 1630's. The beach, Cottage Hill, Court Park, Cottage Park, Point Shirley and the two hills of the Highlands section were all originally part of different family farms, but now comprise residential neighborhoods while Winthrop's newly-revitalized Town Center features a variety of shops.
With its own school district, museum, library and a host of convenient municipal services, Winthrop is a great ocean-side community with many points offering panoramic views of the outer harbor and the Boston skyline. The town features a variety of housing types ranging from condos, single-family and multi-family homes that represent an even greater variety of architectural styles like capes, bungalows, and Victorians.
