The town is run by open town meeting and a board of selectmen who oversee an array of services like water, sewer, police, and fire protection. The recreation department manages several conservation areas, athletic fields, playgrounds and an indoor public pool. Westwood residents enjoy a spectrum of community, crafts and sports activities. There are two public libraries in town and Westwood's school system is highly regarded. There are five elementary schools, a middle school and high school. The vast majority of graduates go on to pursue higher education at top colleges and universities.

Single family homes start at around $325,000 and top prices for exceptional properties run into the millions. The architectural sensibility of Westwood's tree-lined quiet neighborhoods is strongly traditional. Most houses are capes and colonials. Median home prices in this affluent suburb range from $750,000 to $850,000.
