Shrewsbury Real Estate

Shrewsbury is a residential community and suburb of Worcester which is 5 miles away. Shrewsbury is a quiet community, with its own local public schools and an active town parks and recreation department. Lake Quinsigamond is one significant natural feature and is a source of outdoor activities, providing boating facilities and lakeside condominiums. In addition, the town sponsors many youth and family sports programs. Easy access to highways, shopping and entertainment make Shrewsbury an ideal community for family living.

Shrewsbury's 32,000 residents live within approximately 21 square miles of town. Situated on uneven and hilly terrain cut by a number of minor streams providing several small water power sites, the town began in 1664 with a 3,200-acre land grant. Most early settlers arrived from Sudbury and Marlborough to farm and cultivate apple orchards. Large cattle herds supported the production of boots, shoes and other leather manufacturing by 1786. Later on, gunsmith operations, which produced rifles, shotguns and pistols and eventually cutlery, expanded the local economy. In the 19th century, streetcar lines initiated the need for more single-family housing and this transportation innovation brought a summer resort population at Lake Quinsigamond.

As Shrewsbury's industry was hindered by the lack of large waterpower sites and the late arrival of the railroad, its role as a suburb of Worcester grew more pronounced. The town's population doubled from 1915 to 1940 as continued streetcar suburb growth attracted even more new residents into the community.

The town offers an array of services including a public library; full-time police and fire protection; a council on aging that provides senior services; and a school department overseeing four elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school.

Real estate in Shrewsbury offers a variety of single family homes averaging $450,000. Smaller starter homes begin at $200,000 and large, upscale houses can cost over $1 million. Condo/townhouses are also available, often on large, well-maintained grounds, ranging in price from $100,000 to $600,000.
