Oxford Real Estate

Oxford is a quiet community, just 51 miles from Boston and 14 miles south of Worcester. The town's history stretches back to 1686, when French Huguenots, escaping religious persecution in Europe settled in the area. These thirty families had their town incorporated in 1713.

Since then, several important figures have made their home in Oxford. Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross and Dr. Eliott P. Joslin, the pioneer in the diabetes research are among Oxford's most distinguished residents. Oxford's history as a manufacturing town is visible in the remaining Slater Mill buildings, demonstrating how Oxford's past is linked to the Industrial Revolution that swept through similar rural towns in New England. Several old homes often remain and represent traditional cape and colonial styles.

Today, Oxford is primarily a residential community with a small mix of industrial and commercial activity. Centered in the middle of the town is a 1,000-acre flood plain and wildlife management area. Excellent schools and strong local government run by open town meeting and a board of selectmen, are the hallmarks of this typical New England town. Oxford's school district oversees two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. Both through the town's recreation department and through the public schools, Oxford students are involved in various extracurricular activities such as youth soccer, little league baseball and junior R.O.T.C.

Plenty of condo/townhouses starting in the mid $100,000 range are available in Oxford, but single family homes are more prevalent in Oxford. Single family three bedroom homes average from $250,000 to $270,000.

Oxford is situated in south central Massachusetts, and is bordered by Dudley and Charlton on the west, Leicester and Auburn on the north, Millbury and Sutton on the east, and Douglas and Webster on the south. Oxford is also in proximity to Providence, Rhode Island which is only 37 miles away. The central location to the cultural and economic activity of three major New England cities makes Oxford an ideal bedroom community. However, this community can also be appreciated for its own character as a place loaded with the charm of open-space and history.
