Early settlement of the area began in the late 1600's when Dedham residents started farming and building mills along the swift moving Neponset River in present day South Norwood. These settlements became known as the Second Parish of Dedham or by the land's Native American name, Tiot. The population grew steadily through the 18th century and leading up to the American Revolution. The community at that time consisted of small village centers such as Tiot, Morse Village and Ellis and were all part of South Dedham. By 1872, the town gained independent status as Norwood and the period following incorporation saw rapid growth in economy and population. The industry that developed between the 1870's and 1920's drew an influx of immigrant workers and new residents who left their legacy in this now culturally diverse community. Industrial development continued in Norwood through the 20th century, especially after World War II, when the economic base shifted to meet the growing need for high technology.
Today, this suburb of Boston is a well-established community with a variety of local services to meet the needs of its nearly 30,000 residents. There is full-time police and fire protection, a public library, public water and a public school department that oversees six elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. Additionally, the town is active in putting on public events such as a Fourth of July parade and summer concerts at the foot of the impressive gothic style bell tower on the Town Common.
