Melrose is a small city offering an appealing mixture of commercial and industrial activity and suburban residential atmosphere. The community that covers just under 5 square miles is conveniently located 7 miles north of Boston and much of the urban landscape that surrounds Melrose is buffered by the “green belt” of preserved open land and recreation parks.

Melrose developed in the mid 19th century and the downtown area, preserved by the Chamber of Commerce, retains a great deal of its Victorian charm. Additionally in the vast array of home styles that exist in Melrose, from colonial to ranch to contemporary, is an abundance of Victorian homes dating to the late 1800's and early 1900's. The intricate detail on many of these homes is particularly impressive.

Parks and other open space found throughout Melrose include: Ell Pond, in Melrose Center; Middlesex Fells Reservation; two golf courses, Pine Banks Park and Morelli field, a state-of-the-art baseball facility. Additionally, the city is known for the high quality of its municipal services provided for its nearly 30,000 residents. The Melrose school district, for example, includes six early-childhood/ elementary school sites, a middle school and a high school.

Communities surrounding Melrose include Wakefield, Malden, Stoneham and Saugus. Many major roads also crisscross Melrose such as Routes 1 and 99. These roads feature a variety of commercial activity. Public transportation directly to Boston's North Station is available at two commuter rail stations in Melrose: Wyoming Hill and Cedar Park.

The skillful balance between the suburban and the urban, the commercial with the residential is seen in the housing setting variety that exists in Melrose There are dense concentrations of homes in areas of high business activity and there are quiet tree-lined streets elsewhere. Depending on one's needs, Melrose provides homes and neighborhoods to meet most tastes.
