Lancaster Real Estate

Lancaster is a quiet, residential community 36 miles west of Boston. It serves as a bedroom community of larger cities and towns in Worcester County like Leominster and the City of Worcester, located 18 miles south. Covering 28 square miles, this community of 6000 residents maintains a “dry town”; there is a restaurant, but no pubs. Things have been this way since Lancaster was incorporated in 1653. The town recently celebrated its 350th anniversary with a series of festivities that involved the entire community.

Town Hall looks out on Town Green. This impressive brick structure with a façade of columns and a clock tower cupola is home to a municipal government of open town meeting and a board of selectmen. Within Lancaster are two public schools: an elementary school and a middle school. High school students attend Nashoba Valley Regional High School in Bolton or Minutemen Regional High School in Lexington. These schools are noted for their excellence. Additionally, several private and higher education institutions are located in Lancaster including South Lancaster Academy, the Dr. Franklin Perkins School and Atlantic Union College.

Lancaster's important natural asset is the Town Forest. These woods of white and red pines are located along Brockelman and Old County Roads. The 125 acre facility offers a variety of activities including hiking trails, horseback riding, picnicking, camping, and ecology education, as well as winter recreation such as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

The communities surrounding the town include Bolton, Clinton, Harvard, Leominster, Lunenburg, Shirley, and Sterling. Lancaster, tucked away in its rustic setting, is crossed by several state roads including Routes 2, 70, 110 and 117. Interstate 190 is at Lancaster's border and Interstate 495, a major north-south artery of the state is nearby.

Lancaster offers both condo/townhouses and single family homes. Condos start at $200,000, for large, spacious units. Single family residences begin at the same price and average in the mid $300,000 range.
