Hyde Park Real Estate

Hyde Park, Boston's southernmost neighborhood, first grew as a manufacturing community soon after it was settled in the 1660's. Industry here was based in the paper and cotton industries in the early 18th century and powered by the Neponset River and Mother Brook. Later, by the 1850s, rail lines were established, stimulating rapid residential growth. Hyde Park incorporated as its own town in 1868, but by 1912, the community desired to be a part of the City of Boston to take advantage of the city's municipal services. That year, Hyde Park was annexed to Boston and became the last member of a varied family of city neighborhoods. Today, Hyde Park is an interesting marriage of city and suburban life. The neighborhood possesses significant open spaces, including the George Wright Municipal Golf Course and the 450 acre Stony Brook Reservation.

Another notable chapter in the community's history was its role in the Civil War. Camp Meigs, near Sprague Pond in the Readville section of Hyde Park, was the training ground for nearly 26,000 Massachusetts soldiers, including the 54th regiment, the first black regiment mustered for the Civil War and the subject of the film Glory. James Monroe Trotter of the 54th became the first black officer of the American Army.

Today, though part of a large city, Hyde Park in many ways has the feeling of its own town. There are a number of local community organizations such as a trade board, historical society, art association and youth soccer organization, as well as a YMCA location, branch of the Boston Public Library and a precinct of the Boston Police Department.

The neighborhood, covering six square miles, has a population of 32,000 residents, including Boston's current mayor Thomas M. Menino. This tree-lined residential neighborhood of single and multi-family homes resembles a suburb and most commercial activity is found on Truman Parkway and in Cleary Square. MBTA train service from Cleary Square provides commuters with a short ride to Downtown Boston. Additionally, there are eleven elementary schools, two junior high schools, one high school, and two parochial schools in Hyde Park. Public schools are part of Boston's East Zone.

Hyde Park is broken up into several smaller communities such as Fairmount, Readville, Sunnyside, and Stonybrook. Home prices in Hyde Park are typical for outlying residential/ suburban neighborhoods of Boston. Single family and multi-family homes range from $300,000 to $500,000 in this ever-growing market.
