Halifax Real Estate

Halifax is a rural residential community located on the South Shore and in the geographic center of Plymouth County. Surrounding towns include Bridgewater and East Bridgewater on the west, Middleborough on the south, Plympton on the east and southeast, Pembroke on the northeast, and Hanson on the north. The town is also conveniently located just 31 miles south of Boston, making Halifax a place suited to commuters. The area was first settled in 1669 when early English colonists found an amble lumbering supply of extensive woods of white and pitch pine, cedar and oak. They began processing this rich resource by 1728 when the first saw mill was built. By the end of the 18th century, there were five mills operating in Halifax. Lumber was sent south through the Taunton River system and east to the Jones River and North River shipyards. Besides lumbering activity, the town's economic base was in agriculture and in other manufacturing. There were iron furnaces and a cotton factory by 1815, and a large woolen mill in 1822.

During the 19th century, as industry spread in other towns, Halifax's industries burned or closed. The town's economy shifted back to agriculture, centered around significant poultry and cranberry production. At this time, Halifax's identity as a residential town, unspoiled by rapid development became assured. Nevertheless, road construction of Routes 106 and 58 provided better access in and out of town. In addition, the scattered summer cottage colonies began conversions to year-round housing.

Today, Halifax is a quiet town that offers its approximately 7000 residents local services and organizations. There is an active town library and chamber of commerce. Additionally, the town's school department provides public elementary education. Middle and high school students can attend schools in the Silver Lake regional district.

Halifax features a variety of updated condo/townhouse units and comfortable single family homes. Prices start around $200,000 and average just above $300,000. Additionally, there are several subdivisions offering handsome, large-scale homes on over-sized lots for $500,000.
