Ashland Real Estate

The town of Ashland, incorporated in 1846, is bordered by Sherborn on the east, Framingham on the north, Southborough on the west and northwest, and Hopkinton and Holliston on the South. Lying 20 miles east of Worcester and 22 miles west of Boston, Ashland is well-positioned at the midway point between these two major cities.

There is a commuter rail station in town with a travel time of 45 minutes to Boston, making Ashland a convenient bedroom community for people who work in the nearby city. This is primarily a residential community with lots of lawns and trees beside a generous supply of single family colonial homes starting at $250,000, but averaging in the mid 400's for a three or four bedroom house on a large lot. Some townhouses and multi-family homes are also available.

The sleepy community with a full-time police department and fire department also has a conservation commission and a recreation department offering youth sports and programs. The local school district includes two pre-kindergarten programs, three elementary schools, a middle school and a newly constructed high school.

Though largely residential, Ashland values local businesses and has an active business association that promotes local merchants as well as the history and community of the town. One major event in Ashland is the annual Ashland Day, celebrated by residents, visitors and members of the business community.

Settlement of the area that later became the town of Ashland began as early as 1659 with a village of the native Natick tribe. Currently the town has a population of 15,000 and is governed by an elected board of selectmen who hire a town manager.

Noteworthy in this town's history is its past distinctions as the starting point of the Boston Marathon and the place where the electric clock was first invented.
