Arlington Real Estate

Arlington, a suburban community, just minutes from Boston is where the American Revolution began. On April 19, 1775, the first day of fighting, Minutemen converged on Arlington, then called Menotomy, to ambush British troops making their retreat from Lexington and Concord. This day, now called Patriot's Day is still a public holiday throughout Massachusetts.

The area now called Arlington has a long history and has had several names. First settled in 1635 as the village of Menotomy, it eventually separated from neighboring Cambridge in 1807 and became incorporated as West Cambridge. After the Civil War in 1867, the town's name changed to Arlington in honor of the national cemetery.

Though originally a community of farms and mills, Arlington's agriculture is long gone and in its place is a residential town easily accessible by car or rapid transit from Boston and Cambridge. Arlington is bordered on the south by Route 2, a major transportation route allowing access to Boston and the western part of Massachusetts. Arlington is also a short distance from Interstate 93 and 95. Other major routes that go through the town are Routes 2A and 3. Public transportation is provided through the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) serving the Greater Boston area with a bus and train system. The town is bordered on the north by Winchester, on the east by Medford and Somerville, on the south by Cambridge and Belmont and on the west by Lexington.

As a residential community, Arlington offers a variety of home types—condominiums which begin pricing in the high 100's, single family houses that start in the low 400's and two-family houses for approximately $600,000.

Arlington can be called a town of parks—there are twenty-eight maintained by the town's recreation department. They range from small playgrounds and athletic fields to well-maintained hiking trails. With a population of over 42,000, Arlington is served by seven elementary schools one middle school and one high school.
